Amazing story in Therapeutic Riding
We met this young girl about 3 years ago who was very anxious, shy, boisterous who had some mental retardation. She was afraid of putting her foot into a stirrup because of her sensitvity of leaving the ground and being up high. For a few months it took up to 5 or 6 of us to get her into the saddle within those few months she did what we asked of her like throwing the ball, playing frisbee, etc but she didn't engage in communication with us very much. So I had asked her father who was pretty quiet; is there anything she likes that could get her to work with us a bit more. He said no, not really this is all she has done at other centers. Well that may be all well in good for other centers but not here. I thought to myself. The next time we met, I asked her if she would hold this rope for me; I had one rope and she had another. I said look what you can do with your rope and look what I can do with mine.... The horses neck turns when you pull so you can steer her that way. Well.... we did it....Her eyes lit up like a Christmas tree and she wanted to steer from then on. Her anxiety over the three years went up and down and was good one minute and not the other but we found a horse and her that were becoming a team that was unexpected. As I saw she was able to follow some instruction independantly her confidence went up. So we looked for things that she could do without being hooked up to a leader but with having someone next to her to help her when she got anxious or so called ooooops I got stuck (as she would say) In the fall of 2007, it was beautiful and her and her horse were a great team. Now it's time to test her trust in her horse and bring her to the next level. With sidewalkers, walkers behind her and infront of her plus someone was connected with a leadline she went on her first trail ride. She did all the work with directions that she followed. She ofcourse chattered the ENTIRE time but she did it and enjoyed it thoroughly. We are walking back towards the arena and her father got out of the care and said, " I would have never believed it." Before fall ended she was trotting with no problems or anxiety but in the beginning of the summer she would be so anxious if she new in advance that is what she was going to do. Not only has she grown to mount her horse on her own and not 5-6 people helping but dismounting as well with someone holding the horse for her. She now is becoming an independant young woman. What a joy it is to work with her and all of the volunteers completely enjoy her.
